Training Days at Ravenhill

The team at Belfast’s Building Division held a number of training seminars during November for some of their senior drylining customers who intend to develop their Fire Stopping solutions.

The seminars were dedicated to the FSi Ltd product range.

FSi Ltd manufacture and develop a comprehensive range of compartmentation systems suitable for applications all over the world. These systems are primarily used to prevent or slow down the passage of fire, air, sound, movement and water. With personal safety a priority, they’re designed to protect a building’s occupants whilst minimizing loss in the case of a fire.

Tennants have now achieved certification in the theoretical and practical introduction to the installation of FSi Ltd Fire Stopping Products and Systems, and are now inviting selected contractors to gain the same certification and further accreditation in conjunction with companies like CERTIFIRE. Customers North West Drylining & Errigal Contracts have taken part at the Belfast depot in recent weeks.

CERTIFIRE provides assurance that fire protection products and correctly installed systems will perform as required, thereby avoiding costly mistakes and dramatically reducing risk.

Both Belfast and Dublin are now stocking an extensive range of FSi Ltd products.

Training update

There’s been lots going on in the training department this last couple of months.

We’ve had Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint & Access at varying levels, and lots of takers to attend.

We’ve also had fire-fighting equipment training at Charles Tennant Cork and at Airport Road West, where staff were introduced to the relevant legislation and shown a video on how to correctly approach a fire situation. Then it was outside to the live fire rig and the opportunity to use the different types of extinguishers.

(NB: It was pointed out that some of the attendees were NOT potential NIFRS candidates!!)

The operators at Herdman Channel Road also got in on the act with gantry training, specifically designed to keep them safe while working at height on the gantry.

While the team at Bitumen also ticked the working at heights box this quarter, along with CPC Driver renewals.

The training program, as always, is ongoing and we’ll continue to develop and adapt it. Thanks to all who have taken part for your cooperation and enthusiasm and we hope that you find your courses useful.

Tennants Bitumen

In July Tennants Bitumen welcomed two new additions to the vehicular side of the family becoming the proud owners of 2 new Volvo FM 460 trucks.

They’ve since been adorned in new Tennants livery designed by the TBit team, including Steven Caldwell, ably instructed by ‘Head of New Trucks Graphics’ Alan Drennan.

The trucks replace 2 old workhorses that served us well in their 10 years but it’s out with the old and in with the new – may they have many years of safe service ahead!

Shane Climbs for Charity

On 2nd July TBP’s Shane O’Doherty took part in a gruelling endurance event ‘The Fan Dance’ (named after its location on Pen y Fan, Wales) in aid of Irish Guide Dogs for the Blind.

The event is based on the test march for SAS selection and involves a 24km mountain climb across the Brecon Beacons carrying a 40lb pack so not for the faint hearted…

Shane & his team have been in training for 7 months around the Comeargh Mountains & Mount Leinster to get as close as they could to mimicking the real thing, and I have it on good authority that the end result of that training was blister-proof feet which proved to be winning tactic!

The team completed the course which is a massive achievement in itself but in the process they raised €10,000 for their charity.

Health & Safety Focus – Training update

We hear too many horror stories of fatalities at work and so many of them involve vehicle or plant and machinery movement.

In 2014/15 over half the fatal injuries to workers in the UK were of 3 kinds: being struck by a vehicle, being struck by a moving object and falls from height.

Our divisions’ work is traffic heavy, whether it be our own, customer or supplier vehicles, or plant and machinery movements we have much to be wary of and to manage safely.

The Health & Safety Committee representatives agreed that every division should give traffic management the focus it deserves and to that end we have developed a ‘Traffic Marshal’ training course to be rolled out to each division.

Our colleagues at CT Cork & TBP Dublin have already earned their certificates & CTNI’s training is scheduled for late August/early September this year.

HR Focus – A Fresh Start!

It’s always been the Tennants way to strive to be the best at what we do and continually look for ways to improve our quality & range of services. A large part of this is providing a safe, secure and well managed environment for our staff and to this end, as most of you will be aware, Liz Henry has taken on the role of HR Coordinator along with her responsibilities for the Integrated Management System (IMS).

The HR element of this role aims to provide each employee with a one stop point of contact for any HR issue, however large or small, the
facility is there for you.

As part of this increased focus we have engaged the services of Personnel & Training Services (PTS), an expert HR Consultancy firm who will be on hand should we need external advice or assistance.

In tandem with PTS we are currently working on an updated Employee Handbook, of which we hope to deliver a draft in the autumn of this year. After a period of consultation & agreement we are aiming to deliver the completed handbook to each employee by the end of 2016.
